New Roosevelt

Fighting the repeal of
the Millionaires Tax

New Roosevelt was established by activist Bill Samuels to build a movement around making New York State's legislature the best in the nation.

The focus of New Roosevelt are five pillars of reform - redistricting reform, campaign finance reform, fiscal integrity, legislative reform and ethics - that are neither Republican nor Democratic issues but are necessary in order to eliminate the dysfunction that has plagued New York State.  In this effort Bill advocates for progressive change.

Our focus in 2012 through the New Roosevelt Foundation will re-launch the Citizens Committee for an Effective Constitution to restore New York State's reputation as the national policy leader through the critical analysis of outdated New York State Constitutional provisions that have contributed to statewide dysfunction.

In 2010 through New Roosevelt Initiative, Bill supported the election of idealist insurgents like now-Senator Gustavo Rivera to defeat disgraced now-former Senator Pedro Espada as well as women Senate candidates in Upstate New York in order to increase their representation from 16.1% to be more reflective of the fact that women make up half of our population.

Our ultimate goal is to create a truly great legislature that includes principled and capable leaders such as Teddy, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were when they started their political careers in Albany. Through New Roosevelt we will make New York's State Legislature Best in the Nation.

Urges Governor Cuomo to Stop Taking Corporate Donations and Focus on Reforming State Campaign Finance Laws During the Next Legislative Session

Despite first year legislative gains, Governor Cuomo is not setting an example on Campaign Finance Reform, an issue he campaigned on and offered a detailed agenda how to fix when in office. To date he has not only failed live up to his campaign promise, but failed to lead by example on the issue, by raising millions of dollars for his reelection using the same broken system. Only through addressing this issue can Albany be reformed and make state government …

Questioning Continued Use of Special Elections by Governor Cuomo

“The six Assembly Special Elections did not have competitive party primaries that continued the worst traditions of Albany dysfunction. Worse, the process had no accountability to the voters because the candidates were picked by the party leaders not the voters. It is a badly flawed process and a constitutional remedy should be considered,” said New Roosevelt Founder Bill Samuels

Endorsing Jesus Gonzalez as Insurgent Reform Candidate in Brooklyn Special Election

Bill Samuels, founder of the Albany reform organization, New Roosevelt, endorsed progressive candidate Jesus Gonzalez, who is running in the hotly contested special election for the 54th Assembly District in Brooklyn, NY. Gonzalez, a Democrat, is running as the Working Families Party candidate and is the only true reform candidate in the primary.
