Jay Kaplowitz, a veteran in the law field and a founding partner at Gersten Savage, sat down with the summer interns for lunch, which afforded us the opportunity to learn about building a successful corporate law firm. I found his energy and passion for his work inspiring and I am appreciative that I had the opportunity to listen to his insights with regard to building a global law firm.

I was impressed by the breadth of Mr. Kaplowitz’s client base domestically and internationally. As a law student, I realize the importance of building relationships in order to better service clients. Not only does a strong network of relationships give the attorneys the ability to engage in their clients business, it also provides the opportunity for clients to work with a firm that delivers expertise and knowledge relating to their business through their other relationships.

Due to Mr. Kaplowitz’s experience in law, he was able to provide us with insight into the type of character, education and experience that is essential to succeed in this environment. We were afforded the opportunity to ask questions and hear his answers which was valuable to the interns as we look ahead at our careers as attorneys. Mr. Kaplowitz also shared his involvement in the 2000 fundraising for Hilary Clinton when she ran for the United States Senate. This was particularly interesting to me since my internship focuses on campaign strategies, public policy, and fundraising.

At the end of the lunch, Mr. Kaplowitz shared personal stories about how he has developed and maintained long lasting friendships throughout the years due to his law practice. I found it memorable and moving that he shared personal stories with us, and when I got back to my desk, I felt more passionate about providing legal services as an attorney in the years to come.
